Why Choose Safe Start?

The construction industry is one of Australia’s largest employers and safety is its number one priority. Before setting foot on a job site, workers must demonstrate they understand the risks and responsibilities of the work environment. That’s where Safe Start Construction Essentials comes in.

This course is your all-in-one solution to getting job-ready.
Not only does it satisfy legal requirements such as holding a White Card to enter construction sites, it also provides you with hands-on skills in first aid and working safely at heights, two high-value capabilities that employers across multiple sectors look for.

Whether you are aiming to start work immediately, gain qualifications to improve your employability or train a team to meet WHS compliance standards, this combo course is the smart, streamlined choice.

What You Will Learn

1. CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry (White Card)
This essential unit is the legal requirement for anyone who wants to work in construction in Australia. Often referred to as the ‘White Card course’, it provides the fundamental knowledge of Work Health and Safety (WHS) principles, risk management processes and legal responsibilities on-site. You will learn how to:

  • Identify construction hazards and control risks

  • Understand site safety signage and communication

  • Use PPE (personal protective equipment) correctly

  • Follow emergency response procedures

  • Apply safe work practices across various environments

Once completed, you will receive your White Card, a mandatory certification that opens the door to construction sites nationwide.

2. RIIWHS204E – Work Safely at Heights
Working at heights is one of the highest-risk activities in the building and maintenance sectors. This unit trains you to operate safely and legally when working above ground level. You will gain the skills to:

  • Identify job requirements and potential height hazards

  • Inspect and correctly use fall protection equipment

  • Access and work safely on elevated platforms and rooftops

  • Apply procedures to minimise the risk of falls and injury

  • Respond to incidents involving working at heights

This qualification is essential for roofers, scaffolders, painters, maintenance workers and anyone required to work off the ground.

3. HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
First aid is a critical life skill in every industry, especially high-risk environments like construction. This nationally recognised unit equips you to:

  • Respond confidently to medical emergencies

  • Apply CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)

  • Manage bleeding, fractures, burns and shock

  • Communicate details of incidents to emergency services

  • Use first aid kits and equipment safely and effectively

This certification is valid for three years (with CPR requiring annual renewal) and can help you stand out from other candidates in the workforce.
